Wilbert Ellis

Wilbert Ellis was a long-time college coach.
Ellis was assistant at his alma mater, Grambling State, for 17 years (1961-1977) under Prez Jones then was head coach from 1978-2003. He went 745-462-1 and was 4th in Louisiana college history in wins behind Jones, Skip Bertman and Roger Cador. He was Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year seven times (1978, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1991, 1998 and 1999). He was active with numerous charitable and government bodies as well. He was assistant athletic director at Grambling State for 8 years and interim athletic director for two. He is part of the ABCA College Hall of Fame, Grambling State University Alumni Hall of Fame and SWAC Hall of Fame. He helped develop future major leaguers Gerald Williams, Lenny Webster, Courtney Duncan, Gary Eave and Sap Randall.
