Biographical Information

Courtney Duncan played ten years of professional baseball, coming to the majors with the 2001 Cubs for 36 pitching appearances and the 2002 Cubs for two more. With the 2001 Cubs, who won 88 games, he was six years younger than teammate Sammy Sosa.

Duncan is, through 2020, the only former major leaguer with the first name Courtney, although several players have had the name as a last name.

He was born in Mobile, AL forty years after Hank Aaron was born there. He attended Daphne High School, near Mobile, and through 2020 is the only major leaguer from Daphne. Courtney went to Grambling State University, and was the only player during 1990-2020 drafted out of Grambling to make the majors. Several players, including Gerald Williams, were drafted in the 1980s and Gerald was still in the majors when Courtney broke in.

Although only a 20th round draft pick, Courtney was quite successful in his first two minor league seasons, going 11-1 and 10-6 as a starter. He had a tougher time in AA ball, spending parts of three seasons with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, but improved in 2000 as he began to pitch solely as a reliever, and came to the majors at the start of 2001.

With the Cubs in 2001, Courtney was used as a reliever ten times in April, nine times in May and eleven times in June. Then he he appeared once in July, on July 31, and five times in September. He also was in seven games in AAA ball that year. Going into the last three major league appearances in 2001, he was pretty successful, with an ERA of 3.10, but in his last three appearances in September, he gave up ten runs in 2 innings, which ballooned his ERA to over 5.00.

Coming back in 2002, he gave up no runs in two appearances with the Cubs. He pitched pro ball through 2005, signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 2003, getting purchased by the Anaheim Angels organization in August 2003, signing with the Chicago White Sox organization in 2004, and appearing once with an independent team in 2005.

This is not the same Courtney Duncan as the person who has been the World Motocross Champion.
