Biographical Information[edit]

Víctor Vargas has pitched as high as AAA and helped the Colombian national team to a historic Gold Medal.

He was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Rómulo Oliveros. [1] In his pro debut, he was 1-4 with a 6.00 ERA for the 2018 GCL Phillies West. His 62 hits allowed were tied for 4th in the Gulf Coast League. He was much sharper in 2019, split between the GCL Phillies East (1-1, 1.44 in 7 G) and Williamsport Crosscutters (2-0, 1.84 in 4 G). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, he pitched for the Clearwater Threshers (4-1, 2 Sv, 3.62 in 13 G), Jersey Shore BlueClaws (3-4, 10.47 in 8 G) and Lehigh Valley IronPigs (1-0, 0 R in 5 IP), with wildly disparate results. He struck out 88 in 87 1/3 IP for the year. He tied Austin Ross and Douglas Mijares for the most wins by a Phillies farmhand. In '22, he was with the FCL Phillies (1-1, 4.82 in 4 G), BlueClaws (2-1, 2.91 in 7 G) and Threshers (3.48 in 2 G), missing significant time to injury. [2]

Vargas pitched in 2023 for Jersey Shore (4.91 in 3 G) and the Reading Fightin Phils (1-3, 7.14 in 6 G) before being released. In the 2023 Pan American Games, he came up huge for Colombia. His team had dropped their first two games and was facing elimination when he beat Venezuela. They won their next two games to punch their ticket to the Gold Medal Game, where he got the nod to face Brazil and Felipe Natel. He allowed one run in four for the win, with Carlos Diaz taking over in the 5th. It was Colombia's first Gold Medal in baseball in Pan American Games history. He tied Natel, Oscar Nakaoshi and Luis Miranda for the event lead in wins. [3]

Beginning 2024 well with the independent Milwaukee Milkmen (4-1, 2.11 in 7 G, 9 BB in 42 2/3 IP), he was signed by the Cincinnati Reds.
