Triple-A World Series

Similar in form to the Junior World Series, the Triple-A World Series was played from 1998 to 2000. Held at Cashman Field in Las Vegas, NV, it pitted the International League and Pacific Coast League champs in a best-of-five series. While ESPN2 televised games, the 11pm EST start time was detrimental to their numbers. Attendance was also lacking - all three Series averaged less than 4,000 fans a game. Plans to play a Series in 2001 were scrapped as the two leagues could not come to an agreement on the format and game sites.

The Series made its return in 2006 in the form of a one-game playoff between the champions of each league that took place at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, OK called the Bricktown Showdown.

There previously was a Triple-A World Series in 1983, a round-robin series held between the champions of the three Triple-A leagues. Plans to make it an annual event were scrapped in April 1984, when Commissioner Bowie Kuhn objected to playing games in, ironically, Las Vegas.
