Biographical Information[edit]

The son of Tom Grieve and older brother of Ben Grieve, pitcher Tim Grieve peaked at AA then became a scout.

He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 53rd round of the 1989 amateur draft but opted to attend Texas Christian University instead. Five years later, he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 23rd round of the 1994 amateur draft, one pick ahead of John Halama. He had made All-Southwest Conference as a relief pitcher. He made his pro debut that year with the Eugene Emeralds, going 7-1 with a save and a 1.55 ERA in 25 games out of the bullpen. He allowed just 28 hits in 58 innings while fanning 84, though he walked 26. He tied Dave Vanhof and Todd Weinberg for second in the Northwest League in wins, one behind leader Craig Scheffler. Despite pitching solely in relief, he finished 4th in the league in whiffs behind Vanhof, Marino Santana and Ken Sikes. Had he qualified (he was 3 innings shy), he would have been second in ERA, .07 behind DeVohn Duncan and well ahead of #3 Vanhof's 2.30. He might not the best member of his family in the league, though - brother Ben hit .329 with 51 walks in 72 games. Both Grieves made the NWL All-Star team, Ben in the outfield and Tim joining Bubba Dixon as the two relievers picked.

After missing the 1995 season with injuries, he came back in good form in 1996 with the GCL Royals (0-1, 1 UER in 3 IP), Lansing Lugnuts (0-1, 1 R in 3 IP) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (4-1, 4 Sv, 1.31 in 22 G), though his peripheral numbers were not as dominant as in '94. In 1997, he continued to fare well with Wilmington (4-1, 7 Sv, 1.88 in 26 G, 24 H in 38 1/3 IP) and the Wichita Wranglers (3-1, Sv, 3.38 in 17 G), striking out 70 and walking 41 in 75 2/3 IP for the year.

He finishing his playing career with one season in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. He was 4-2 with six saves and a 4.73 ERA for the High Desert Mavericks, striking out 61 in 45 2/3 IP. Overall, he had gone 22-8 with 19 saves and a 2.54 ERA in 122 career games. In 219 2/3 IP, he struck out 252, allowed just 154 hits and walked 109.

Since his playing days, Grieve has been a Detroit Tigers scout. He has signed Jordan Tata, Brent Clevlen, Kenny Baugh, Kevin Whelan, Chance Ruffin, Tyler Collins, Zac Reininger and Bryan Holaday among others.
