- 1938 - Gabby Hartnett hits the "homer in the gloamin'" off Mace Brown to give the Cubs a 6-5 victory in the close pennant race against their rival Pittsburgh.
- 1941 - Ted Williams goes 6 for 8 in a doubleheader to finish the season with a .406 batting average; no one has since topped .400 in the major leagues.
- 1975 - The first four-pitcher no-hitter in major league history takes place as Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott, Paul Lindblad and Rollie Fingers shut down the Angels, 5-0.
- 1995 - Greg A. Harris (pictured) becomes the first pitcher in the 20th Century to pitch both right-handed and left-handed in the same game.
- 1997 - Tony Gwynn wins his 8th batting title, tying Honus Wagner for the most in a career.
