- 1934 - The Chicago Cubs acquire Freddie Lindstrom and Larry French from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Babe Herman, Guy Bush and Jim Weaver.
- 1950 - The first Japan Series begins. Rube Marquard throws out the first pitch and the Mainichi Orions beat the Shochiku Robins, 3-2, in 11 innings. Tadashi Wakabayashi gets the win.
- 1954 - The Pittsburgh Pirates select Roberto Clemente (pictured) from the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1954 Rule V Draft.
- 1957 - Warren Giles lets Larry Goetz go after 22 years as a National League umpire due to his being outspoken over umpire rights.
- 1972 - For the second time in three years, Johnny Bench wins the MVP Award in the National League while Billy Williams places second.
