Biographical Information[edit]

Tae-won Kim pitched in the KBO for 12 years.

Kim was drafted by the MBC Blue Dragons in the first round of the 1986 KBO draft, and he went 2-6 with a 2.86 ERA in his first season. His ERA rose to 8.44 in 10 games in 1987, and he missed most of that season and the next season due to military service. Kim was 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA in 1989, then he improved to 18-9 with a 2.51 ERA in 1990. He was 2nd in wins (4 behind Dong-yeol Sun), 4th in ERA (between Yong-soo Kim and Yong-deok Han) and 6th in strikeouts (between Kye-hyun Cho and Yong-soo Kim). He pitched 9 innings with 2 runs allowed in the 1990 Korean Series Game 2, and he won the title as the LG Twins swept the Samsung Lions.

The Seoul native was 8-8 with a 4.84 ERA in 1991, then he went 10-14 with a 3.40 ERA in 1992. He led the league in losses that season, and he was 9th in strikeouts (between Han and Eun-jin Park). Kim completed a no-hitter on September 9, 1993 against the Ssangbangwool Raiders, and he ended up 8-8 with a 2.42 ERA. He was 6th in ERA, between Min-chul Chung and Hyeong-bae Yun. Kim had a 16-5 record with a 2.41 ERA in 1994, and he was 4th in ERA (between Sang-jin Kim and Sang-Hoon Lee) and 3rd in wins (1 behind Lee and Cho). In the 1994 Korean Series, Kim allowed 4 runs in 3 1/3 innings, and he won his second title as the Twins swept the Pacific Dolphins.

Kim slumped to 9-11 with a 5.01 ERA in 1995, and he was 9-12 with a 3.79 ERA in 1996. He went 3-2 with a 5.46 ERA in 1997, and he announced his retirement after the 1998 season. He then became the pitching coach for the Twins from 2001 to 2002 and for their minor league team in 2000. He was also the assistant coach for Gwangju Dongsung High School in 2004 and 2008, for Daegu Sangwon High School in 2009 and from 2011 to 2012 and for Gongju High School in 2010. He was named the coach of Jeonju Kijeon College in 2024.

Overall, Kim was 85-77 with a 3.43 ERA, struck out 819 and pitched 1,399 2/3 innings in 12 seasons in the KBO.
