Biographical Information

Tae-hyeong Kim was an Olympic catcher who later managed several KBO champions.

Kim was on the South Korean national team in the 1988 Baseball World Cup, hitting .316/.409/.368 with 5 RBI in 8 games; he backed up Dong-soo Kim at catcher and Ki-woong Kang at DH. In the 1988 Olympics, he was 1 for 5 with a RBI, backing up Dong-soo Kim again. He was picked by the OB Bears in the 4th round of the 1988 KBO draft.

He hit .181/.239/.217 in his KBO debut in 1990, .226/.279/.281 in 1991 and .244/.306/.285 in 1992 and .277/.318/.364 in 1993, enjoying a fine defensive reputation while playing part-time for the Bears. In 1994, he batted .231/.275/.291, followed by .216/.252/.294 in 1995 when the team won the 1995 Korean Series. He produced at a .272/.277/.323 clip in 1996. In 1997, he hit .267/.308/.384 in 92 plate appearances then he batted .203/.261/.238 in 1998. The team became the Doosan Bears in 1999, when he hit .200/.256/.300 in 37 games and was 4 for 23 in 2000 and 1 for 3 in 2001. He hit .235/.279/.296 in 828 KBO games.

He was a player-coach his last season as a player, then became battery coach for the Bears from 2002-2011. He moved to the SK Wyverns in the same role from 2012-2014. He became Doosan's skipper in 2015. He took them to Korean Series each of his first seven years, winning it all in 2015, 2016 and 2019. After a big drop to 60-82-2 in 2022, he was replaced by Seung-yeop Lee.
