Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Steve Smith was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 1983 amateur draft and played for the Great Falls Giants that year, going 8-3 with 107 strikeouts. After missing most of 1984 with an elbow injury, he won 8 games for the Fresno Giants in 1985. He finished his pro career in 1986 with the Phoenix Firebirds.
After retiring, Smith was a graduate assistant at Texas A&M University (1988-1989) while working on his master's degree, then was an assistant coach at Mississippi State University for five years (1990-1994). Smith was the head coach at Baylor University from 1995-2015. He led Baylor to five conference titles, 13 regional appearances, four Super Regionals and the 2005 College World Series.
Smith became an assistant coach at Santa Clara University in 2017, then moved to Auburn University in 2018-2019. He returned to the head coaching ranks with Tennessee Technological University in 2020, remaining there for two years before being hired by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league pitching coordinator.
