Biographical Information

Pitcher Steve Finch was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 2nd round of the 1976 amateur draft, but never made the majors. His best minor league season was in 1977, when he was 15-5, 2.92 for the Asheville Tourists of the Western Carolinas League. However, he was likely overused that year, as he hurt his arm the following season and never had good strikeouts numbers afterwards; he had struck out 193 in 191 innings for Asheville. He pitched 7 seasons in AAA, from 1980 to 1986, but usually had very high ERAs. In 1985, however, he was 8-7, 4.11 for the Edmonton Trappers, which was quite good in the high-octane hitting environment of the Pacific Coast League.

On December 12, 1980, he was traded by the Texas Rangers with Richie Zisk, Brian Allard, Rick Auerbach, Ken Clay, and Jerry Don Gleaton to the Seattle Mariners for Rick Honeycutt, Mario Mendoza, Larry Cox, Leon Roberts, and Willie Horton. Of the 10 players involved in the deal, Finch was the only one not to play in the major leagues.
