Biographical Information[edit]

Stan Jakubowski was a college star who spent four years in AAA yet never made the majors.

Jakubowski was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 42nd round of the 1972 amateur draft but opted for college. He starred for the Miami Hurricanes in the 1974 College World Series, beating Harvard with a complete game. He was 16-3 with a 1.46 ERA for the season and made the All-Tournament Team alongside George Milke and Mark Barr of USC, the team that beat Miami in the finale.

Jakubowski helped Team USA win the Gold Medal in the 1974 Amateur World Series. He set Hurricanes career records for complete games (27), innings (432) and ERA (1.81). He was 40-14 overall and ranked third in school history in wins as of 1998. His number 29 was retired by the University of Miami and Stan was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1998. Through 2010, he was one of only three Miami hurlers to have their numbers retired - the others were Neal Heaton and J.D. Arteaga.

Jakubowski started his professional career badly. A reliever for the 1976 Charleston Patriots in the Pittsburgh Pirates chain, he went 2-3 with 3 saves and a 4.97 ERA and 19 walks in 38 innings. He did fan 46. He spent the rest of his career in the Texas Rangers system. In 1977, he had a 4-3, 2.74 record and one save for the Asheville Tourists. He split '78 between the Tulsa Drillers (6-2, 3 Sv, 2.81, 67 K in 64 IP) and Tucson Toros (3-2, Sv, 3.54).

Stan the Man also split 1979 between Tulsa (3-3, 3 Sv, 2.09) and Tucson (1-4, 2 Sv, 10.45). He was with the 1980 Drillers (5 R, 9 H in 5 IP) and Charleston Charlies (0-1, Sv, 3.43). He wrapped up in '81 with the Wichita Aeros, allowing four runs in seven innings. Overall, he had gone 19-18 with 11 saves and a 3.88 ERA in 142 games (4 starts) in the minor leagues.
