Biographical Information[edit]

Shigeru Morii pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Morii was signed by the Nagoya club when they were founded in 1936, and he was 8-5 with a 3.49 ERA in the fall season. He led the JPBL in hit allowed and shutouts, ranking 2nd in wins (5 behind Eiji Sawamura) and 4th in strikeouts (between Mitsuhiko Ishida and Chujiro Endo). He then went 3-9 with a 4.91 ERA in the 1937 spring season, and he was 5-11 with a 3.36 ERA in the fall season. Morii tied Toshihide Hatafuku and Hisashi Kondo for 2nd in losses in the fall season. He was 4-9 with a 3.38 ERA in the 1938 spring season, then he went 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA in the fall season.

The Mie native was enlisted into the military, and he missed two seasons. He was 4-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 1941, then he had a 4-13 record with a 1.85 ERA in 1942. Morii went 5-5 with a 1.32 ERA in 1943, and he was 6-12 with a 2.25 ERA in 1944. He led the league in losses , homers allowed and shutouts in 1944, and he was 8th in ERA (between Yoshio Tenbo and Masaaki Noguchi). Morii was 10-13 with a 3.16 ERA in 1946, and he announced his retirement. When the Hiroshima Carp were founded in 1950, they contacted him and Morii signed with the Carp. However, he was 2-8 with a 5.70 ERA in that season, and he retired again.

Overall, Morii was 53-93 with a 3.11 ERA, struck out 368 and pitched 1,350 1/3 innings in 10 years in NPB.
