Biographical Information

Infielder Sheldon Neuse was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 2nd round of the 2016 amateur draft, out of the University of Oklahoma. He had earlier been a 38th round pick by the Texas Rangers out of high school in 2013, but had decided to go on to college.

The Nationals assigned Sheldon to the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League to begin his pro career in 2016. Playing mainly third base, he hit .230/.305/.341 in 36 games. In 2016, he was promoted to full-season ball with the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League, where he hit .291/.349/.469 in 77 games, split between shortstop and third base. On July 16th, he accompanied P Blake Treinen and another prospect, Jesus Luzardo, to the Oakland Athletics in a trade for Ps Ryan Madson and Sean Doolittle. After the trade, he played for both the Class A Stockton Ports and AA Midland RockHounds, hitting well over .350 at both spots. Altogether, his batting line for the year was .321/.382/.502 in 117 games, with 16 homers and 79 RBIs.

He spent the 2018 season with the A's AAA affiliate, the Nashville Sounds, his outstanding hitting at the end of the previous season having convinced the team brass that he did not need any more time at AA. He found the going tougher, as while he hit .263, he hit just 5 homers and drove in 55 runs in 135 games. In 2019, he got to make his major league debut at the end of August after an excellent season for the A's new AAA affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators. In 126 games, his slash line was .317/.389/.550 with 99 runs, 102 RBIs, 31 doubles and 27 homers. With the A's he hit .250 in 25 games with no homers and 7 RBIs, his playing time being limited by the A's presence in a tight postseason race. He was then one of the players whose development was badly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as he did not appear in any games that season, being confined to the A's alternate training site and not getting a call to the Show.

Following the lost season, with Matt Chapman firmly implanted at third base for Oakland, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on February 12, 2021, alongside P Gus Varland, in return for P Adam Kolarek and OF Cody Thomas. With Justin Turner's status with the team still uncertain, he had a chance of competing for the still vacant job at the hot corner for the defending World Champions.
