Biographical Information[edit]

Seung-yong Choi pitched in the KBO and for the South Korea national baseball team.

Choi was drafted by the Doosan Bears in the second round of the 2021 KBO draft, and he had a 3.93 ERA in 15 appearances in his rookie year. He pitched 1 2/3 innings with a run allowed combined in the 2021 Korean Series, but the Bears were swept by the KT Wiz. Choi was used as a swingman in 2022, and he went 3-7 with 5 holds and a 5.30 ERA in 48 appearances. He improved to 3-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 2023. Choi then made it onto Korea's roster for the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship. He pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts against Australia, and he added a shutout inning with a strikeout against Chieh-Sen Ma of Chinese Taipei. In the Gold Medal Game, he relieved Been Gwak in the 6th inning against Japan, and he gave up a double to Chusei Mannami. Makoto Kadowaki then bunted, and Teruaki Sato drove in a run with a fly ball. Choi retired Yuki Okabayashi to end his work, and Korea lost due to Kadowaki's walk-off single.

The Namyangju native struggled in 2024, and he missed most of the season due to a left elbow injury. He only pitched 12 games, and his ERA was 6.00.

Choi's repertoire included a fastball (peak 91.6 mph), slider, changeup and curveball.
