Biographical Information

Pitcher Scott McGregor played in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system from 2008 to 2014, the Washington Nationals system in 2015, for the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization and the independent Somerset Patriots in 2016 and for the Fubon Guardians of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2017.

McGregor had a 2.62 ERA and 53 K in 53 1/3 IP as a high school senior and hit .344; he also played soccer in high school. He was 7-3 with a 5.40 ERA as a college freshman. His 13 homers allowed, though, were third in Conference USA. He fell to 5-4 with a save and a 6.63 ERA as a sophomore and tied for second in Conference USA in runs allowed (66) and earned runs (54). He only gave up two homers as a junior but went 1-8 with a 5.19 ERA and 115 hits in 78 IP. He led the conference in losses, hits allowed and runs allowed (64). He was taken by the Cardinals in the 15th round of that year's draft, a few picks after outfielder Joey Butler.

The inconsistent hurler has had a few notable seasons. In his first campaign, he had a 1.45 ERA in 37 1/3 innings between the GCL Cardinals (5 R in 4 IP), Johnson City Cardinals (4-0, 0.33 in 7 G) and Quad Cities River Bandits (3 R in 6 1/3 IP). He struggled at 7-11, 5.56 for the 2009 River Bandits. He tied for 4th in the Midwest League in losses and tied Ryan Kulik and Evan MacLane for 5th in the Cards chain in defeats.

In 2010, he was 10-8 with a 3.14 ERA in 31 games (20 starts) for the Palm Beach Cardinals (4-3, 2.68 in 16 G) and Springfield Cardinals (6-5, 3.46). He walked only 22 in 137 2/3 IP and Baseball America rated him as having the sharpest control in the Cards' chain. He tied for 5th in the St. Louis system in wins and was 7th in ERA. He then missed all of 2011 due to Tommy John surgery. In his return, he struggled in 2012 with Palm Beach (3 R in 8 IP) and Springfield (5-2, 6.86).

He won 10 games in 2013, playing for Springfield (4-1, 2.44) and the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. In his first taste of Triple-A, he was 6-10 with a 4.83 ERA in 18 games (17 starts). He tied Tim Cooney for the most wins by a Cards farmhand but also tied Richard Castillo for third in losses. He tied Brooks Raley and Tyler Skaggs for 9th in the 2013 PCL in defeats. He was 1-1 with a 5.55 ERA that winter for the Cardenales de Lara of the Venezuelan League.

He began 2014 with Memphis before moving to the Nationals system partway through the year, going 4-9, 5.56 overall. He remained in their system in 2015, going 6-6 with a 4.04 ERA in 27 games (15 starts) for the Syracuse Chiefs. With Nexen in 2016, he was 6-3, 5.20 and with the Patriots that year, he was 4-4, 3.36. With Fubon in 2017, he was 1-2, 4.88 in 5 starts.

At all levels, McGregor went 58-57 with a 4.47 ERA in 203 games (149 starts) over 9 seasons.

He played for the United States national baseball team in the 2015 Pan American Games.
