Biographical Information[edit]
Sammy De Los Santos pitched in the Dominican Republic, the US, Italy and Germany.
De Los Santos was signed by scout Junior Noboa of the Arizona Diamondbacks in January 2008. He debuted as a pro with the '08 DSL Diamondbacks, going 2-4 with a 1.12 ERA and .78 WHIP. He finished third in the Dominican Summer League in ERA.
The right-hander was 1-1 with a save and a 4.40 ERA for the 2009 Missoula Osprey but allowed a .308 opponent average. In 7 games for the 2010 Osprey, he was 0-1 with a save and a 7.48 ERA before joining the Spanish national team shortly before the 2010 European Championship. He was atrocious in his lone start, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) in 1 1/3 IP in a loss to Greece; a Mike Tonis 3-run homer was the big blow.
Back in the US, he was 0-2 with 3 saves and a 1.98 ERA in 20 games for the 2011 Yakima Bears. He went 2-1 with a 4.56 ERA for Godo in the Italian Baseball League for 2012. As a reliever for Spain in the 2012 European Championship, he was much better than in 2010, tossing two shutout innings and completing Leslie Nacar's whitewash of Greece for some revenge. Spain also rebounded, from a tie for 9th in 2010 to a Bronze Medal in 2012.
In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he got into one game for Spain. Relieving Richard Salazar with a 2-1 deficit against Israel, he allowed a single to Josh Satin then fanned Jake Lemmerman before Ivan Granados relieved; Israel won 4-2 but Spain beat them in the finals to advance to the 2013 World Baseball Classic. He was one of three hurlers Spain replaced prior to the Classic, as Rhiner Cruz, Yoanner Negrin and Sergio Perez replaced him, Remigio Leal and Manny Olivera.
