Biographical Information[edit]
Samaria Benítez was a shortstop/pitcher for Mexico in the 2022 Women's Baseball Americas World Cup Qualifier, going 6-for-11 and posting a 1-0, 1.75 record, beating Lorena Medrano and the Dominican Republic. Mexico won a spot in the 2023 Women's Baseball World Cup. She did not qualify for either the batting title (only Lisandra Berrios-Lopez had a higher average among qualifiers) or for the ERA title (she had as good an ERA as the 5th-place finisher). [1] In Mexico's first Women's Baseball World Cup, she hit .167/.250/.167 but scored six runs in five games in group play, while fielding .947 as their starting shortstop. She was their first batter in a WBWC, grounding out against Canada's Raine Padgham. In the 4th, she got their first hit to ruin Padgham's perfect day, advanced on an error and a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Edith De Leija for Mexico's first run in a WBWC. She also had their first fielding chance, making an error on a ball from leadoff hitter Sena Catterall, though she played perfect defense the rest of the tourney and had their first assist when she fielded Alizée Gélinas's grounder and threw to third to get Catterall. She led Mexico in runs, tying for 5th in the event with Denae Benites, Ticara Geldenhuis, Zoe Hicks and Remi Schaber. Her ten assists were one shy of co-leaders Caitlin Enyon and Ju-a Park and she had the best fielding percentage of anyone with more than five assists. Mexico advanced to the final-six, to be held in 2024. [2]
