Biographical Information[edit]
Ryan Reid made his major league debut at age 28.
Reid was redshirted as a college freshman in 2004. In 2005, he was 3-5 with a 5.75 ERA and hit .210 as a part-time outfielder. He improved to 10-6, 3.43 in 2006 with 124 strikeouts in 94 1/3 IP. He led the Colonial Athletic Association in wins, was second in strikeouts, was second in walks (43) and led in K per 9 innings. He was 8th in NCAA Division I in K/9, between Eddie Degerman and Adam Ottavino. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays, behind scout Doug Witt, took him in the 7th round of the 2006 amateur draft (between Michael McKenry and Austin McClune; all 3 would spend time in the Pittsburgh Pirates chain during their careers).
Reid made his pro debut with the Hudson Valley Renegades, going 1-9 with a 6.24 ERA. He led the New York-Penn League in losses, tied for the most hit batsmen (9) and was among the top five in runs allowed (42) and earned runs allowed (37). He was much better in a relief role with the 2007 Columbus Catfish (6-5, 10 Sv, 2.97, 93 K in 72 2/3 IP). He was third on his team in strikeouts, behind Heath Rollins and Jeremy Hellickson, despite his limited inning total. He continued to do well in 2008 with the Vero Beach Devil Rays (3-0, 8 Sv, 45 K, 3 BB, 14 H in 31 IP) and the Montgomery Biscuits (5-4, 4 Sv, 4.66, 53 K, 31 BB in 46 1/3 IP). He tied Dale Thayer for third in the Rays chain in games pitched (52) and tied for 8th with 98 strikeouts.
Reid was 0-1 with a save and a 4.17 ERA in 42 games for the 2009 Biscuits, striking out 50 in 58 1/3 innings. He went 3-3 with two saves and a 3.98 ERA for Montgomery in 2010. His 13 wild pitches tied for second in the Rays chain and was second in the Southern League in wild pitches despite his solely relief role (6 behind Dan Cortes). Ryan split 2011 between the Biscuits (2-0, Sv, 6.75, 27 H in 16 IP) and the Durham Bulls (1-1, 4.55 in 26 G). He was 1-0 with 10 saves and a 1.86 ERA in 18 games for the 2010-2011 Águilas del Zulia. He was 4th in the Venezuelan League in saves, behind Jon Hutton, Enrique Gonzalez and Jean Machi.
The Maine native was 6-3 with a save and a 3.52 ERA in 46 games for the 2012 Bulls, striking out 79 in 79 1/3 innings. Only closer Dane De La Rosa pitched more games for Durham that year. Back with Zulia in 2012-2013, he was again a star reliever (1-1, 8 Sv, 1.64, 26 K in 22 IP). He tied Hunton for 6th in the LVBP in saves. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a free agent. He started 2013 very well with the Indianapolis Indians (6-1, Sv, 0.52, 0.84 WHIP after 20 G). With Pittsburgh's bullpen facing fatigue issues, he and Jared Hughes were called up in early June (Alex Presley was sent down and Jeanmar Gomez was DL'ed).
Reid made his big league debut, relieving Mike Zagurski with the bases loaded, two outs and a 7-1 deficit in the 7th. He retired Reed Johnson to escape that jam. In the bottom of the 8th, he got three straight ground-outs, from Andrelton Simmons, Jason Heyward and Justin Upton. Brandon Inge batted for Reid in the 9th. Reid was the 12th major leaguer from James Madison University and the first since Dan Meyer broke in back in 2004.
