The Vero Beach Devil Rays began play as a Tampa Bay Devil Rays affiliate in 2007 after 27 years as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers known as the Vero Beach Dodgers. In their inaugural year, the team went 34-35 to finish third in the East Division during the season's first half before dropping to 25-44 and falling to last place in the second half. Sergio Pedroza led the offense, hitting .286 with 22 homers and 70 RBIs, while Jake McGee anchored the rotation with a 5-4 record and a 2.93 ERA and 145 strikeouts in 21 starts before being promoted to the AA Montgomery Biscuits. Both earned spots on the Florida State League All-Star team.

Following the 2008 season the team moved to Port Charlotte, Florida and became the Charlotte Stone Crabs.
