Biographical Information[edit]
Ryan Perry was drafted in the 1st round of the 2008 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers, with the 21st overall pick out of the University of Arizona. Scouted by Brian Reid, he was signed for a $1.48 million bonus and made his pro debut that summer.
Perry made his major league debut with a perfect inning of work in relief for the Tigers against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 8, 2009, after barely 14 games of professional experience. In spite of his relative inexperience, he spent almost the entire season with the big league club, only going down to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens for 8 games. He was used regualrly as a set-up man out of the Bengals' bullpen with the team fighting to preserve its lead in the AL Central division. He was 0-1, 3.79 in 53 games. In 2010, he went 3-5, 3.59 with 2 saves for the Tigers, pitching 60 times, but he struggled in 2011, when his ERA rose sharply, to 5.35 in 36 games. He did pitch in the postseason that year, twice in the ALDS against the New York Yankees, and three times against the Texas Rangers in the 2011 ALCS. He did not give up any runs in 2 1/3 innings in the first series, but was tagged for 6 hits and 5 runs in 4 innings by the Rangers.
On December 9, 2011, he was traded to the Washington Nationals in return for Collin Balester but only pitched 7 times for the Nats in 2012, with 1 win but a 10.13 ERA. He went back to the minors and did well as a starter with the AA Harrisburg Senators that year, with a 2.84 ERA in 73 innings, but he wasn't able to build on that, struggling with his health over the next couple of seasons. The Nationals released him after the 2014 season, after he had spent all of 2013 and 2014 in the minors, and he signed back with the Tigers in February of 2015.
