Biographical Information[edit]

Ruben Angeles has played regularly for the Philippines national team. He was MVP and won best defensive player in the 1999 Asian Baseball Cup, also leading in rusn and RBI as the Philippines won a spot in the 1999 Asian Championship. In the 2001 Baseball World Cup, he was 2 for 20 with a steal and a run as the Filipino club's second baseman. He only fielded .824, with 6 errors in 7 games. He was the Philippines' starter at second base in the 2002 Asian Games, hitting leadoff. He was 4 for 12 with a walk and a steal; he had one of their two hits in a loss to Japan, one of their two hits against Taiwan and one of their three hits against China. Christian Canlas was their only other player with multiple hits.

He appeared in the 2003 Asian Championship then helped the Philippines take Gold in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. In the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, Angeles batted .148/.148/.148 with no runs produced in nine contests. He fielded .939 at second. He next was in the 2006 Asian Games.

In the 2007 Asian Championship, the 40-year-old was not only the lone Philippines player with hits in each game, but the only one with more than one hit in the whole tournament, going 3 for 7, better than some of the Japanese and Korean stars. He had their only hit in their loss to Hideaki Wakui of Japan. Angeles's 6 assists at second led the tourney and he made no errors. He helped the Philippines to a Silver in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games.

Angeles continued to shine in his old age, being named one of the "Best Players" in the first phase of the 2009 Asian Championship, helping his country win a spot in the 2010 Asian Games. He scored the winning run in the Gold Medal Game of the 2011 Southeast Asian Games at age 44. He coached for the Philippines in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
