Biographical Information[edit]

Rosa del Castillo was the first woman to play in the Clemente Grijalva League in Mexico's Sinaloa State, at age 17. [1] She was the best pitcher in the 2019 qualifiers for the 2020 Women's Baseball World Cup, helping Mexico qualify for their first Women's Baseball World Cup, but the Cup was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] She was MVP of the first Baja Women's Baseball Cup in Mexico, in 2022; she fanned 12 in the finale and threw a fastball at 80 mph, impressive speed for a female player. [3]

Del Castillo was 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in the 2022 Women's Baseball Americas World Cup Qualifier, beating Nicaragua's Karen Mendoza and losing to Puerto Rico, a 1-0 pitching duel against Janiliz Rivera. She threw a four-hitter in the loss, but Adrix Paradizo doubled in the 6th and Lisandra Berrios-Lopez singled her home. She also played some first base, going 1 for 6 with two walks and a run. She was 4th in the tourney in IP (14, between Mayumis Solano and Angela Burgos), tied Mary Rodriguez and Burgos for second in complete games (2, one behind Rivera) and second in K (14, 3 behind Rivera). [4] Mexico won a spot in the 2023 Women's Baseball World Cup.

In the 2023 Cup, she started Mexico's first World Cup appearance but lost to Raine Padgham and host Canada, giving up two runs in three innings (5 H, 1 BB) before Paulina Ruiz. She did fan two (Lucie Anctil and Emily Baxter). She played DH and hit cleanup the next game, grounding out against Abbey Kelly of Australia in her first time up. She singled off Kelly the next time and Mexico wound up with a crucial win over the former Bronze Medal winners. She later threw a three-hitter, with no walks and five whiffs, to beat Min-sung Park and South Korea as Mexico clinched a spot in the 2024 finals phase of the event. In their last contest, for placement purposes, her 4th-inning single off Elise Berger stopped Mexico from being no-hit by tourney champion Team USA. She finished at .400/.455/.400 with 4 runs in 3 games at DH. She was second in group A in ERA (.11 behind Berger), second in innings (2/3 behind Berger) and tied for 4th in K with Yin-Sum Kwong and Kelsie Whitmore. [5]
