Biographical Information[edit]
Rodney Theophile has pitched in the minors and for the Nicaraguan national team.
He was signed by Washington Nationals scout Johnny DiPuglia in June 2018. [1] He was 0-4 with a 10.67 ERA and 2.37 WHIP for the 2018 GCL Nationals then missed 2019 with injury and 2020 when the minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. [2] He was 4-11 with a 5.56 ERA for the 2021 Fredericksburg Nationals, tying for third in the Nats chain in losses. In the Low-A East League, he was second in losses (one behind Karlo Seijas, a teammate) and only Seijas allowed more runs.
He improved in 2022 with Fredericksburg (5-1, 1.29 in 9 G) and the Wilmington Blue Rocks (1-7, 5.03 in 15 G), fanning 110 in 102 1/3 IP. Among Washington farmhands, he was fifth in strikeouts but tied for the most wild pitches (14). He then was with Nicaragua for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. The big right-hander pitched one game, relieving Osman Gutiérrez in the 4th with a 4-0 lead over Pakistan. He walked Iyad Ansari but Shan Sundu into a double play and he got Rohan Shah swinging. In the fifth, Alex Khan singled but Theophile got Pierce Khan on a liner. Sami Khan hit into a force and Umair Imdad Bhatti went down swinging. Joaquin Acuna relieved in the 6th with a 10-0 lead. Nicaragua would win one of the spots in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, making it to the World Baseball Classic for the first time. [3]
