Biographical Information

Robert Gaston played for the Homestead Grays from 1932 to 1949, winning many titles with them. He was a starter at catcher for just two years, backing up Double Duty Radcliffe, Josh Gibson, Tommy Dukes and Tex Burnett among others in his career. Not a pleasant character, he was rumored to have killed a man.

In 1940, Gaston got his first chance to start when Gibson left for the Mexican League; Robert hit .265. He fell to .195 in 1941, his other starting season. He was 0 for 2 in the 1942 Colored World Series. In game three of the 1943 Negro World Series, he substituted for Gibson and drove in a run with a single, the first run in a 4-3 win.
