Biographical Information

Catcher Fred "Tex" Burnett was a journeyman Negro League catcher and first baseman in the 1920s and 1930s, and a manager and part-time player in the 1930s and 1940s. Available statistics show that he generally batted in the mid-.200s with medium power.

Burnett was a back-up catcher and occasional starter for the Pittsburgh Keystones, Indianapolis ABCs, New York Lincoln Giants, Harrisburg Giants, Atlantic City Bacharach Giants, Brooklyn Royal Giants, New York Black Yankees, Baltimore Black Sox, Homestead Grays, Newark Dodgers, Brooklyn Eagles, Newark Eagles, Pittsburgh Crawfords and Nashville Cubs. While he primarily played for weaker teams, he did occasionally play for some of the stronger teams of his day, and caught some of blackball's best pitchers, including Leon Day, Smokey Joe Williams, Max Manning, Ray Brown, Roy Partlow, Ted Trent, Luther Farrell, Jonas Gaines, William Bell, Satchel Paige, and Terris McDuffie.

He briefly managed the Newark Eagles in 1937, and took over the Black Yankees in 1940.
