Biographical Information

Randy Wiles pitched in 5 games for the Chicago White Sox in 1977. He did not start any game but was involved in two decisions. He got a win on August 8th against the Seattle Mariners. He pitched the last two thirds of the 9th inning, then Lamar Johnson hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame to win the game, 5-4. His loss came on August 16th against the New York Yankees. He came into the game in the bottom of the 8th inning and retired Mickey Rivers and Roy White. The White Sox then rallied for 6 runs in the top of the 9th against Sparky Lyle and Ken Clay. Wiles came back out to pitch the bottom of the 9th and gave up a walk to Thurman Munson, a sacrifice to Lou Piniella and a walk-off home run to Chris Chambliss. Wiles did not appear in another major league game after that day.

He was a star at Louisiana State University from 1970 to 1973 before turning pro. His 7 career shutouts remain the school record, and one of them was a one-hitter. He died of cancer in 2015 at the age of 64.
