Biographical Information[edit]

Speedy outfielder Randy Curtis played in the minor leagues from 1991 to 1994 and from 1996 to 1998. He played in Triple-A for parts of two seasons, but never reached the majors.

He was drafted twice. Initially, he was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 7th round of the 1990 amateur draft, between infielder Ed Giovanola and pitcher Joel Adamson, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the New York Mets in the 8th round of the 1991 amateur draft, one pick ahead of infielder Luis Ortiz and in the same round as pitchers Brad Radke, Jason Schmidt, Derek Lowe and Steve Trachsel. He was signed by scout James Woodward.

He began his career with 26 stolen bases in 75 games for the Pittsfield Mets in 1991, then he hit .295/.404/.363 with 33 steals in 102 games for the Columbia Mets in 1992. He had a career year with the St. Lucie Mets in 1993, hitting .319/.434/.448 with 52 stolen bases, 12 triples, 91 runs scored and 93 walks (to just 72 Ks) in 126 games. He was a Florida State League All-Star and the league's MVP. On December 10, 1993, he was sent as a player to be named later in a deal that, in total, sent himself and pitcher Marc Kroon to the San Diego Padres in exchange for pitcher Frank Seminara, infielder Pablo Martinez and minor leaguer Tracy Sanders.

Curtis reached Triple-A for the first time in 1994, but hit just .208/.307/.299 in 77 at-bats there; his performance slumped overall as his total batting average was .253 for the year. After not playing in 1995, he returned to steal 22 bases at High-A in 1996. He joined the Cleveland Indians system for 1997 and though he hit .270/.367/.469 with 10 home runs for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, his speed disappeared and he had just 1 steal with them and 3 on the year. He last played for the independent Mission Viejo Vigilantes in 1998 to wrap up his career.

Overall, Curtis hit .285/.399/.394 with 26 home runs, 241 RBI, 154 stolen bases and 373 walks in 583 games over 7 seasons.
