Biographical Information[edit]
On June 4, 1990 Joel Adamson was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh round of the draft. He spent the season with the Appalachian League Princeton Patriots, going 2-5, 3.88 in 12 games. During the next six years, Joel was part of eight teams in seven leagues before getting his first chance with the Florida Marlins in 1996.
Joel appeared in 9 games with the Marlins, with no decisions, and was sent to the International League Charlotte Knights for the remainder of the year. On November 25, the Marlins traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he had a promising year in 1997 going 5-3 in 30 games while pitching 76 innings with a good 3.54 ERA. He was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1998 expansion draft, but his first season was cut short by rotator cuff surgery. Like many ballplayers, Adamson was superstitious about success. "If I pitch good, I won't wash my socks," the lefty told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in 1997. Joel went 0-3 in 5 games with Arizona in 1998, pitching 23 innings with a 8.22 ERA. On October 2nd, he was released. He tried to make a comeback in 1999 with the Pawtucket Red Sox, going 2-4, and with the Tacoma Rainiers. He was released at the end of the season, ending his career.
In the bigs, Joel was 5-6 in 44 games, pitching 110 innings with a 4.89 ERA. In the minors, he was 47-52 in 194 games, pitching 881 innings with a 4.27 ERA. He primarily wore number 38.
