Biographical Information[edit]
Pil-sung Kong played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 11 years.
Kong played for South Korea in the 1989 Intercontinental Cup and 1989 Asian Championship. The Lotte Giants selected him in the first round of the 1990 KBO draft, and he hit .232/.312/.305 in 78 games in his first season, being used as a shortstop. He then recorded a .215/.280/.323 batting line in 1991, and he was moved to third base in 1992. Kong improved to .286/.347/.432 with 6 homers in 1992 season, then he collected 23 doubles with a .240/.299/.325 batting line in 1993. He was 5th in doubles, tied with Sung-han Kim and Hyeong-seok Kim.
The Changwon native had his career year in 1994, and he crushed 12 homers with a .271/.355/.436 batting line. He was 8th in doubles (between Jong-suk Kim and Joon-hyuk Yang), 6th in steals (25, tied with Jun-ho Jeon) and 3rd in triples (1 behind Chan-yup Roh and Jong-ho Park). He then recorded a .264/.378/.362 batting line in 1995, ranking 10th in walks (tied with Jae-hak Shim) and 3rd in triples (6 behind Jun-ho Jeon). Kong also broke the KBO record by collecting 22 hit-by-pitches in a season (Jong-ho Park broke it in 1999). He lost his starting spot after Hyun-seung Park joined the team in 1996, and he played 114 games with a .251/.316/.358 batting line.
Kong hit .246/.307/.333 in 1997, then he recorded a .245/.327/.338 batting line in 1998. He slumped to .214/.292/.311 in 1999, then he announced his retirement after hitting .208/.287/.269 in 2000. Kong was the fielding coach for the Lotte Giants from 2002 to 2014, and he coached Sunrin Internet High School in 2015. The Doosan Bears named him their fielding coach from 2017 to 2018, and he became the bench coach for the Giants in 2019. He was named their interim manager on July 18, 2019, and he returned to the Bears as their fielding coach for their minor league team in 2020 and for their big club in 2021. Kong coached the minor league team of the NC Dinos from 2022 to 2024, and he was their interim manager in 2024.
Overall, Kong hit .248/.326/.355 with 760 hits and 41 homers in 11 seasons in the KBO.
