Biographical Information[edit]

Pedro Ángel Álvarez has pitched in the Cuban Serie Nacional and for the Cuban national team.

He debuted in the 2013-2014 Serie Nacional with Sancti Spíritus; the teenager was 0-1 with a 8.31 ERA in 3 games. He was 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA in another 3 games in 2014-2015. In 2015-2016, he went 1-6 with a save and a 5.11 ERA. He improved to 3-3, 3.25 with two saves in 2016-2017 but slipped to 2-5, 5.36 in 2017-2018. [1]

Álvarez really stepped it up in 2018-2019 at 10-3, 3.66 with a save and 89 K. He was among the league leaders in wins (tied for 6th with Dachel Duquesne, Frank Medina and Alaín Sánchez), homers allowed (9, tied for 4th), walks (tied for 6th, 44, even with Yoen Socarrás), strikeouts (3rd, behind Yariel Rodríguez and Wilson Paredes) and hit batsmen (13, 4th). [2] That performance earned him a spot on Cuba's team for the 2019 Pan American Games. He led the team with three appearances though his 21.69 was second-highest (Medina was higher). His first game, he relieved Vladimir García with a 3-1 deficit in the 7th against Colombia and allowed one run in 2/3 IP before Medina took over. He replaced Freddy Asiel Álvarez in the final frame against Argentina and finished the shutout by retiring Eduardo Zurbriggen, Agustín Tissera and José Gerez in order. In the 5th/6th place game, he was part of a Cuban bullpen that blew a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the 10th, taking over for Raidel Martínez with a 9-3 lead, two out and men on the corners against the Dominican national team. He walked Deibinson Romero, plunked Willy Garcia to make it 9-4 and allowed a 3-run double to Diego Goris to cut it to 9-7. Medina relieved and the Dominicans kept it up for the comeback win. [3]
