Biographical Information[edit]

The father of big leaguers Daniel Bard and Luke Bard, catcher Paul Bard played as high as AA.

He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 36th round of the 1979 amateur draft but did not sign. With their next pick, Pittsburgh took another catcher, Joel Skinner. He was then taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 6th round of the 1980 amateur draft, one pick before Jeff Moronko.

Paul debuted with the 1980 Lethbridge Dodgers and hit .232/.337/.293 as a backup catcher on the Pioneer League champions. With the 1981 Vero Beach Dodgers, he posted a .237/.303/.327 line in 89 games. He made 13 errors, tying Mark Salas for the most by a Florida State League backstop. He began 1982 back with Vero Beach (26 games) before being let go. Signed by the independent Miami Marlins, he played 47 more contests. For the year, his batting line was .231/.326/.347. Bard played his last two seasons in the Baltimore Orioles chain. He hit .205/.292/.410 with 7 home runs in 122 at-bats for the 1983 Hagerstown Suns. In 1984, he batted .226/.308/.409 for the Charlotte O's, backing up Al Pardo.

Overall, Paul Bard hit .229/.312/.351 with 16 home runs, 95 runs and 112 RBI in 265 minor league games (878 plate appearances). He fielded .975.

In addition to his son Daniel, Bard is also the son-in-law of college coach Fran O'Brien and brother-in-law of minor leaguer Kevin O'Brien. He is also related to John Andreoli (his wife's nephew).
