Biographical Information[edit]
The grandfather of big leaguers Daniel Bard and Luke Bard, Fran O'Brien was head baseball coach at Randolph High School from 1959-1968 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1969 to 1996. MIT plays home games at Fran O'Brien Field.
He was an assistant at Tufts University for two years. He was an assistant coach at the College of the Holy Cross from 1999 to 2001 and head coach from 2002 to 2004. He was also head basketball coach during much of his time at MIT. He later was an assistant at Brandeis University starting in 2007 (and still held that role as of 2012).
In addition to his grandsons Daniel and Luke, O'Brien had a son, Kevin O'Brien, who played in the New York Yankees chain in 1980. Another grandson, John Andreoli, has played in the majors.
