Biographical Information[edit]

Pat Scanlon, called "Scanlan" in sources such as Sporting Life, is not to be confused with Pat Scanlon, a much later player. He hit a decent .292 for the Boston Reds in 6 games in 1884. He played left field. Tim Murnane, later a famous baseball writer, was his manager and future Hall of Famer Tommy McCarthy also made his debut that year. Pat played his first game on July 4th, while Tommy got into his first major league game on July 10th, a day before Pat appeared in his last game. McCarthy was also primarily a left fielder that year.

Sporting Life of July 16, 1884, seems to say Scanlon came from Augusta, ME, although the surviving copy here [1] is hard to read.

"Scanlon" was also the name of the manager of the Washington team of the 1884 Union Association - Mike Scanlon.
