Biographical Information

Pat Murphy has been a major league manager, minor league pitcher, college coach and minor league manager. He is the father-in-law of Pedro Alvarez.

In 1983, Murphy was 1-5 5.50 ERA in 6 starts and 22 relief appearances for the Salem Redbirds in the San Diego Padres chain. He struck out 63 in 88 IP, but walked 44.

In 1985, Murphy was 5-5 5.32 ERA for the independent Tri-Cities Triplets of the Northwest League, leading the team in IP. He was tied for second on the team in wins. In 1986 the Triplets were a co-op team and Murphy was named player/manager. Murphy only relieved in 7 games, getting one win and one save, posting a 2.25 ERA in 12 IP.

Murphy was the head baseball coach at Maryville College in 1983, and assistant football coach. He was an assistant at his alma-mater in 1984-1985, then was the head coach at Claremont-Mudd Scripps in 1986-1987. Murphy then moved to the University of Notre Dame from 1988 to 1994. In 1995, Murphy moved to Arizona State University replacing Jim Brock. He managed the Dutch national team to a Gold in the 1987 European Championship and guided them again in the 2000 Olympics, leading the Netherlands to their first win ever over Cuba. Murphy resigned in November 2009 with a record of 629-284-1 in 15 seasons at ASU.

In 2011, Murphy moved to the pro ranks as manager of the Eugene Emeralds in the Padres organization and continued in that position in 2012. He moved to the AAA Tucson Padres in 2013 and followed the team as it became the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2014. On June 16, 2015, he was appointed manager of the major league Padres, one day after long-time manager Bud Black was fired and following a one-game interim by Dave Roberts. He had earlier sought permission from the Padres to interview for the position of manager of the Milwaukee Brewers after the firing of Ron Roenicke, but GM A.J. Preller had refused the request, as the Padres also had big plans for him. He completed the season as the team's manager, but on the final day of the season, October 4th, the Padres announced that his services would not be retained for the following season.

Following his dismissal from the Padres, Murphy joined the Milwaukee Brewers as bench coach under manager Craig Counsell in 2016. Murphy had been Counsell's manager when he was a player at the University of Notre Dame thirty years earlier. On August 1, 2020, he suffered a mild heart attack while overseeing a practice session with the Brewers forced into inactivity when their scheduled opponents that day, the St. Louis Cardinals were dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak. He was immediately transported to the hospital. He made a full recovery thanks to the quick reaction of the Brewers' training staff. He was back as a coach with the Brewers in 2021. He was wearing uniform number 59, but when the Brewers added reliever John Axford on August 2nd, he gave it up so that the former closer could wear the number that he had worn in his starring days in the city; he opted for the unconventional - especially for a coach - 00 instead.

On November 13, 2023, news leaked out that he had been selected to succeed Counsell, who had been hired away by the Chicago Cubs, as Brewers manager in 2024.
