Biographical Information[edit]

Osvaldo Abreu has played in the minors and for the Dominican national team.

He was signed by Washington Nationals scouts Modesto Ulloa and Johnny DiPuglia in April 2012. [1] He debuted that summer with the DSL Nationals, hitting .279/.381/.363, stealing 22 bases in 36 tries and fielding .912 at short. Coming stateside with the '13 GCL Nationals, he produced at a .286/.369/.381 clip and went 16-for-22 in steals. He improved his fielding at short to .940. He was 4th in the Gulf Coast League in steals.

In 2014, he slumped to .229/.279/.305 with the Auburn Doubledays while fielding .917. The next year, he rebounded to a .274/.357/.412 batting line for the Hagerstown Suns. He stole 30 bases in 41 tries, rapped 35 doubles and scored 74 runs. He tied Jordan Luplow and Michael Suchy for 2nd in the South Atlantic League in runs (one behind Corey Toups), was 5th in doubles (between Luplow and Suchy) and was among the Nationals system leaders in runs (1st, 8 ahead of Grant DeBruin), doubles (2nd, 4 behind teammate Jose Marmolejos) and steals (tied Wilmer Difo for 2nd, one behind Chris Bostick).

Abreu fielded .957 at SS for the 2016 Potomac Nationals and drew 55 walks, scoring 86 times. He was 3rd in the Carolina League in runs (behind Greg Allen and Anthony Santander). In the Nats chain, he was 2nd in runs (one shy of Marmolejos) and 5th in walks (between Drew Ward and Matthew Page). Sent to the Arizona Fall League, he hit .267/.303/.317 for the Glendale Desert Dogs. He tied for 9th in the AFL with five swipes.

The La Romana native hit .246/.299/.336 for the 2017 Washington Senators but only stole one base and drew 27 walks. He led Eastern League shortstops in putouts (187), double plays (81) and errors (29, tied with A.J. Simcox). That winter, he was 4 for 17 for the Tigres del Licey. He repeated at Harrisburg in 2018 but his offensive numbers fell (.183/.259/.311). With Licey in the winter, he was 0 for 3.

Demoted back to Potomac in 2019, he produced at a .265/.343/.370 clip as a backup infielder. He was with the Dominicans for the 2019 Pan American Games, hitting .286/.375/.286 as their main shortstop (.941 there) and scoring 4 runs in 4 games, 3 of those coming against host Peru. He was second on the Dominicans in runs, one behind Ronny Paulino. [2]
