Biographical Information[edit]

Backup infielder Wilmer Difo set a record of sorts while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 21, 2021. He was called upon to pitch the 8th inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves in which the Pirates were already trailing 12-1, and in which they did not want to use any more real pitchers. He managed to get the required three outs, but not before allowing another 8 runs to score, including a grand slam by pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza. This was the most runs ever allowed by a mystery pitcher (a few had given up 7 runs before him), and Adrianza's homer allowed the Braves to become the first team to hit seven homers, including two grand slams, in a single game; Ronald Acuna had hit another grand slam earlier in the game. In spite of this rather uninspiring performance, he was called up once again to the mound on August 28th, in a 13-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, but this time he did not allow any runs in spite of giving up three hits, and as a result, he managed to cut his career ERA in half, to 36.00. He did a lot better as a position player, batting .269 in 116 games with 4 homers and 24 RBIs and an OPS+ of 94, which wasn't bad for a utility player.
