Biographical Information

Neder Horta has been a player, manager, coach, general manager and scout in the baseball world.

Horta debuted with the 1985 GCL Yankees, hitting .245 with 42 runs in 53 games. He was the starting shortstop for the '85 Gulf Coast League champions. In the off-season, he was traded with Jim Deshaies and Dody Rather to the Houston Astros for Joe Niekro.

In 1986, Horta batted .223/~.338/.280 for the Asheville Tourists with a team-high 109 strikeouts in 336 at-bats. His team almost won another title, finishing second in the South Atlantic League. For the 1987 campaign, the Cartagena native hit .209/~.313/.238 in 65 games for Asheville, which again was second in the SAL; Horta was no longer a starting shortstop but a backup middle infielder.

During his final season as a player in the US, Neder split 1988 as a utility infielder between the Auburn Astros (.193/.366/.227, 36 BB in 53 G) and Asheville (.175/.320/.200 in 52 G, 25 BB). His great walk rate could not compensate for his poor performance otherwise.

Horta later managed the Colombian national team in the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup and 2010 South American Games (in which they won a Silver Medal). He has managed in the Colombian League (being named Manager of the Year in 2005) and also been a General Manager and coach there.

Horta was a St. Louis Cardinals scout in Colombia from 2001 to at least 2010. He signed Donovan Solano. Horta managed the DSL Cardinals for two years, going 66-70. In 2009, he was hitting coach of the GCL Cardinals. In 2010, he coached for the VSL Cardinals.

Horta managed the DSL Astros Orange in 2015. He also guided Colombia that year, winning the 2015 South American Championship for a spot in the 2015 Pan American Games, their first Pan American Games in 32 years. He remained their skipper in the 2015 Pan American Games. He coached for Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, when they won a spot in the World Baseball Classic for the first time. He managed Colombia to a Bronze Medal in the 2016 South American Championship and coached for them when they won Gold in the 2017 Bolivarian Games, their first Gold in a Bolivarian Games in 44 years.
