A baseball and football star at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana, Miley was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the 1971 amateur draft. He chose to attend Louisiana State instead, where he excelled in both baseball and football. He was LSU's starting quarterback in 1973, and played in the 1974 Orange Bowl, a 16-9 loss to Penn State.

Miley was then a first round pick of the California Angels in the 1974 amateur draft. He began 1975 with the AAA Salt Lake City Gulls and hit .209 in 81 games before being called up to the majors. He became the Angels regular shortstop in short order and posted a .174 average in 70 game for the team. However, he was back in the minors with Salt Lake City to start 1976, posting a .274 average and stealing 28 bases in 119 games for the Gulls. This performance earned him a September call-up back to California, for whom he hit .184 in 14 games.

Miley played for the Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rico Winter Baseball League.

Miley died in a car accident in Baton Rouge, LA on January 6, 1977 at age 23. Mike Miley Playground (formerly Airline Park Playground) on West Metairie Avenue in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana is named after him, and there is a Mike Miley Stadium.
