In 1975, the Salt Lake City Angels, a California Angels farm team, were renamed the Salt Lake City Gulls. The team reached the Pacific Coast League championship series in each of its first two seasons, but lost to the Hawaii Islanders both years. Finally, led by skipper Jimy Williams, they were able to sweep Hawaii and capture the league crown in 1979. The team became a Seattle Mariners affiliate in 1982, but the Gulls struggled financially. After the 1984 season, the club was sold and moved to Calgary, where it became the Calgary Cannons.
