Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Mike Frick was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 8th round of the 2001 amateur draft and played in their system until he died in 2003.

He set his college's records for appearances and saves both in a season and a career. He began his career with the Vancouver Canadians in 2001, going 7-2 with three saves and a 2.70 ERA in 21 appearances. He struck out 54 batters in 40 innings of work. He tied Anthony Pannone, Carmen Pignatiello and Brett Price for 5th in the Northwest League in wins, behind starters Angel Guzman, Jesse Foppert, Sergio Mitre and Dontrelle Willis.

In 2002, with the Modesto A's, Frick was 7-6 with 23 saves, 46 games finished and a 2.89 ERA in 50 appearances. He tied Evan Rust for second in the California League in saves, trailing Jared Hoerman and he also tied Ryan Cullen and Steve Fischer for fifth in games pitched. He led A's farmhands in saves, 7 ahead of Franklyn German. He pitched for the Midland RockHounds in 2003, going 1-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 28 appearances.

Overall, he was 15-10 with a 3.39 ERA and 26 saves in 99 appearances. He had 141 strikeouts in 138 innings of work.

He died in a one-vehicle car accident on November 27, 2003 at the age of 23; the driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicions of drunk driving. Two other passengers died along with Frick.
