Biographical Information[edit]

Reliever Evan Rust played in the minor leagues from 2000 to 2005. He reached Triple-A for parts of three seasons, but never ascended to the major leagues.

He began his career in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays system in 2000. With the Princeton Devil Rays, he was 5-2 with a 2.89 ERA in 26 relief appearances. The next year, with the Charleston RiverDogs, he went 7-6, 3.06 with 12 saves in 35 games (11 starts). In 2002, between two clubs, he went 1-4 with a 2.83 ERA in 54 games, earning 31 saves and striking out 70 batters in 57 1/3 innings; he earned a spot on the California League All-Star team. He was 3-5, 2.96 with 12 saves in 56 games between two clubs; In his first taste of Triple-A, he went 2-2 with a 3.25 mark in 26 games for the Durham Bulls. On November 21, he was traded with a player to be named later (John-Paul Davis) to the St. Louis Cardinals for first baseman Tino Martinez. He spent two seasons in the Cardinals system, posting an ERA of 4.67 in 50 appearances (5 starts) the first and a mark of 4.93 in 30 games the latter. Nevertheless, he was 9-3 between those two campaigns.

Overall, Rust went 25-20 with a 3.47 ERA in 251 games (16 starts) over six seasons. He had 139 games finished and 66 saves. In 374 innings, he allowed 355 hits and 140 walks (1.324 WHIP), while striking out 338 batters. At Triple-A, he was 6-3 with a 4.79 ERA in 67 games.
