Mikael Aho starred for the Swedish national team when they won the Bronze Medal at the 1993 European Championship, the first time they had hosted a European Championship and their best finish in 12 years. He went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, allowing 6 hits and 10 walks in 14 innings while striking out 16. He allowed only one hit (to Antonio Salazar) and one run in seven innings to beat Félix Cano and 1991 Bronze Medalist Spain (which had beaten Puerto Rico in the 1992 Olympics) and teamed with Tobias Rantzén on a 3-2 win over France. He was 6th in the 1993 Euros in ERA (between Peter Callenbach and Mariano Marchini), allowed the lowest average (.133, .014 ahead of Frank Jäger), was 4th in K/9 (between Geoffry Kohl and Oswald Boermans), ranked 10th in opponent OBP (.316, between José Pulido and Danny Wout), tied for first in wins (with Samuel Meurant, Boermans, Massimiliano Masin, Rubén Garcia, Patrick Klerx and Kohl), tied Wout for 5th in IP, tied Klerx for third in strikeouts, tied Patrice Baudin and Calle Skogqvist for 7th in walks, tied Klerx and Roger de Saedeleer for the most quality starts (2) and handled the second-most error-free chances at pitcher (6, two behind Klaus Knüttel). Despite his excellent work, he was not back with Sweden for the 1994 Baseball World Cup. In the Elitserien, he played for the Skellefteå Basebollklubb.
