Biographical Information[edit]

Rubén García pitched for the Spanish national team several times.

He debuted with Spain as a 18-year-old in the 1993 European Championship. He was far from outmatched, going 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA, beating Russia and Leonid Korneev and Germany and Klaus Knüttel. He was Spain's ace, finishing among the tournament leaders in ERA (2nd behind Eelco Jansen's 0.00), lowest average allowed (.158, 4th, between Patrick Klerx and Jansen), WHIP (5th, between Rickard Reimer and Mikael Aho), opponent average (.273, 5th, between Reimer and Frank Jäger) and wins (tied for 1st with Samuel Meurant, Oswald Boermans, Massimiliano Masin, Klerx, Geoffry Kohl and Aho). [1]

In the 1993 Intercontinental Cup, Spain's youngest player was 0-1 with a 9.69 ERA and .375 opponent average, but not much worse than the team ERA of 8.04. His loss came against Cuba but he did better against the then-unstoppable Cubans than many more prominent hurlers did, allowing five runs in eight. [2] He was 0-1 with a save and a 4.15 ERA in the 1995 European Championship. He tied for first in saves and tied for 2nd with 4 games pitched (one shy of Emiliano Ginanneschi). [3] The right-hander had a 24.00 ERA in the 1995 Intercontinental Cup but was not Spain's highest as José Becerra and Juan Tellechea were at 27.00. [4]
