Biographical Information[edit]

Tobias Rantzén played for the Swedish national team in the 1993 European Championship. He backed up Roger Sund in RF and Peter Schöön in CF and also pitched 3 games. At the plate, he was 3 for 7 with 2 runs, a double, a RBI and a walk as their top backup in terms of average; among the starters, only Johan Hasselström had a better average as Sweden won its second Bronze in European Championship annals. He went the distance in a 8-5 loss to Maurizio De Sanctis and Silver Medalist Italy. In the opener of the Bronze Medal round, he saved Mikael Aho's 3-2 win over France, with two shutout innings (0 H, 1 BB, 3 K). He did not fare as well in the next game, allowing 2 runs (0 H, 3 BB, 1 HB, 1 K) in one inning after relieving Petter Vesterlund; Roderick Hopkins took over and Sweden would hold on for a 11-9 win. Rantzén had a 7.36 ERA for the event. He tied for 8th in the event with 3 games pitched, tied for 3rd with one complete game (Leonid Korneev and Patrick Klerx had two apiece), tied for 3rd with one save (Tom Nanne and Hopkins had two) and tied for 10th with 9 walks.
