Biographical Information[edit]
Mariano Marchini pitched in Italy's Serie A1 and for the Italian national team.
Marchini had a 2.53 ERA for Milano in the 1992 regular season as a rookie and was 1-0 with 7 2/3 shutout innings in the postseason. [1] In 1993, he fell to 0-4 with two saves and a 7.66 ERA. [2] He still made Italy's roster for two major events. In the 1993 Intercontinental Cup, he got the tough nod of starting against Team USA and Terry Harvey. He allowed two runs in 1 2/3 IP, facing Todd Helton, Russ Johnson and A.J. Hinch among others; Maurizio De Sanctis took over. He closed out their 14-2 loss to South Korea, relieving Alessandro Parri and again yielded two runs in 1 2/3 IP. Only Parri had a higher ERA for Italy. [3]
In the 1993 European Championship, he threw seven scoreless to beat Andreas Becker and Germany; Massimo Fochi closed it out. He finished 1-0 with a team-leading 1.64 ERA for the Silver Medalists. He was 6th in ERA, between Mikael Aho and Frank Jäger. [4] After not pitching in Italy's top loop in 1994, he was 12-5 with a 5.13 ERA for Torino in 1995. He was third in wins, two behind Gianni Ricci and one behind Luis Lunar. [5] He was 0-1 with 8 runs (7 earned) in 2 2/3 IP for Torino in 1996, though. [6]
He next surfaced in 2002, going 4-12 with a 5.03 ERA and 103 K for his hometown Codogno team; he was 4th in losses but he and John Kelly were the team's two main starters. [7] In his final season, 2003, he allowed 5 runs in 2 1/3 IP for Bologna. [8] He had been 17-23 with a 5.51 ERA in 62 games in Italy. [9]
