Biographical Information[edit]

Michal Ešmír has played in the Extraliga and for the Slovakian national team.

He was Slovakia's second-youngest player in the 2008 European U21 Championship, about a month older than Jakub Okasa. He allowed three runs (one earned) in three innings while going 0 for 5 with a run. He took the loss against Philippe Lecourieux and France. [1] As a pitcher-outfielder in the 2009 European Junior Championship, he hit .318/.423/.318 with five runs in six games, going 3-for-3 in steals, handling 14 chances error-free and was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA. He beat Russia but lost to Belgium. He led Slovakia in average (by .057), slugging (by .057), runs (one ahead of Martin Bosý) and hits. He was second to Jakub Ižold in ERA. [2]

Ešmír was 1-0 despite a 9.00 ERA in the 2010 European U21 Championship, beating Ukraine and Kostyantyn Korolev. He allowed a tourney-high 17 hits, one more than Korolev. [3] In the 2011 European Championship Qualifier, he was 1 for 5 with a walk, two runs and three RBI while allowing a run in a third of an inning. [4] He was 3 for 13 with a double in the 2012 European U21 Championship. [5] He allowed five runs in three innings in the 2013 B-Level European Championship, losing to Belarus. [6]

The 25-year-old was a 2B/3B in the 2017 B-Level European Championship and batted .450/.542/.700 to lead Slovakia in average (.055 ahead of Mário Gottschall) and OBP (.048 ahead of Gottschall). He fielded .842. He was 6th in the tournament in average, 5th in OBP, tied Edvardas Matusevičius and Dominick Golubiewski for 3rd in hits, tied for 7th in assists (10) and tied for the error lead (3). [7] He spent that summer in the Extraliga, going 2 for 22 with two walks for the Třebíč Nuclears. [8]

Michal was 2 for 7 with two walks, two runs and a RBI for the '18 Nuclears. [9] He also spent part of the summer with Apollo Bratislava. In the 2018 Federations Cup, he was at .238/.273/.429 with five runs in five games, fielding .789. He tied for 4th in errors. [10] He produced at a .450/.542/.700 clip in the 2019 B-Level European Championship with six runs and six RBI in five games, stealing four bases in five tries. Defense was an issue as he fielded .615. He was 6th in average, 10th in OBP and slugging, tied for third in hits (9), tied for second in triples (2), tied Matusevičius for 4th in total bases (14) and 3rd in errors (5). [11]

At the 2021 European Championship Qualifier, he was on Slovakia's team but did not play. [12] Slovakia won to get a spot in the 2021 European Championship, their first European Championship. He split third base with Denis Pakši in the Euros. He was retired by Mike Bolsenbroek of the Dutch national team in his first at-bat in a European Championship and got his first hit off Sweden's Oskar Syrén. He finished the event 2-for-15 while fielding .800. He tied for 7th in the Euros with three errors that year. [13]
