Biographical Information[edit]

Masaki Tanigawa has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

Tanigawa played for Kyushu Mitsubishi Motors in the industrial leagues after college. He made the Japanese squad that would win the 2017 Asian Championship and performed very well. In his debut, he retired all nine Hong Kong batters faced before Keita Hirao took over. In his other start, against defending champion South Korea, he went 8 shutout frames (6 H, 1 BB, 11 K) but was matched by Jung-bin Kim for 7 before Japan finally scored. Katsutoshi Satake finished it up. Tanigawa led the 2017 Asiads in ERA and tied Subg-han Kim and Kenya Suzuki for the most wins. He was named the All-Star pitcher, though staffmate Daiki Tajima was MVP.

Tanigawa was picked by the Hanshin Tigers in the 5th round of the 2017 NPB draft; the scout was Shuta Tanaka. He began 2018 in the minors but was called up to the big team and debuted on May 10.

He throws a fastball (peak 92.5 mph), slider, curveball and shuuto.
