Marvin Appiah has been an outfielder in the Bundesliga. In 2002, he hit .282/.385/.404 for the champion Paderborn Untouchables. At age 20 in '03, he batted .356/.419/.542 and Paderborn won another pennant. He was 8th in the league in slugging. In the 2003 European Championship, Appiah batted .273/.304/.455 for Germany. In 2004, Appiah hit .302/.400/.419. In the 2004 European Championship B-Pool, he was 12 for 24 with 2 walks, a double, a triple, 10 runs and 11 RBI in six games to help Germany get back to the A Pool.
Appiah produced at a .345/.411/.540 rate in '05 with 30 RBI in 27 games. He was third in the league in RBI, 5th in slugging and 10th in OPS. In the 2005 European Championship, the 22-year-old hit .257/.297/.457 with 11 strikeouts in 35 AB; his 4 doubles tied Jamel Boutagra and Raily Legito for the lead.
In '06, Appiah hit .313/.337/.398. He moved to the Mannheim Tornados in 2007 and batted .382/.440/.605. He was 8th in the southern Bundesliga-1 in average, 5th in slugging and 9th in OPS. The next year, he hit .368/.419/.623. He was 9th in average, tied for second in homers (5, one behind Klaus Hopfensperger), 6th in RBI (22), tied for 7th in hits (39, even with Adalberto Paulino), second in triples (3), was 4th in slugging and fifth in OPS.
Appiah's batting line in 2009 was .411/.459/.623 with 32 RBI in 24 games. He finished second in average behind Simon Gühring, tied for the most homers (5, leading German natives), led in RBI, was second in hits (39, one behind Simon Gühring), tied Gühring for 7th in runs (22), was 3rd in slugging, 7th in OBP and third in OPS. Despite his success, Germany did not put him on their 40-man preliminary roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
