Biographical Information[edit]

Manuel Arroyo was a top Mexican third baseman of the 1940s who also managed for many years.

Arroyo debuted in 1938 with the Alijadores de Tampico and hit .280/.302/.441 with 20 runs in 24 games. He fell to .222/.374/.292 for the 1939 Industriales de Monterrey. In 1940, when numerous Negro League stars filled Mexican rosters, Manuel was one of the few native Mexicans to remain in the league. He held his own at .303/.374/.439 for Monterrey and Tampico. With Tampico in '41, he put up a .298/.433/.421 batting line. He had 7 triples and 54 walks in 74 games, while only striking out 29 times. In 1942, he was player-manager of Tampico and hit .311/.470/.459 with 8 triples, 71 walks and 81 runs in 88 contests.

During 1943, the Chihuahua native slumped to .223/.322/.330. He hit .313/.381/.385 for Tampico in '44 and managed the team for part of the year. He did not play in 1945 then batted .284/.317/.394 for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico in '46, the year that major leaguers were coming to Mexico. He was still with the Diablos Rojos in 1947 but did not do as well with a .240/.354/.286 line. He fell further, to .222/.331/.269 in 1948. In 1949, he played for both the Charros de Jalisco and Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo, also managing Jalisco for part of the year; his combined line was .278/.359/.404.

In 1950, he struggled with Nuevo Laredo, as the 32-year-old veteran hit .205/.314/.250. He hit .231/.336/.329 for the 1951 Azules de Veracruz to end his playing career. Overall, he had produced at a .265/.340/.367 with 372 walks, 454 runs and 71 steals in 814 Mexican League games. He would remain active in Mexico as a manager in the 1950s and 1960s.

In winter ball, he piloted Culiacán to four Mexican Pacific League titles - 1949, 1950, 1952 and 1956.
